The superorbital variability and triple nature of the X - ray source 4 U 1820 – 303

چکیده
We perform a comprehensive analysis of the superorbital modulation in the ultracompact Xray source 4U 1820–303, consisting of a white dwarf accreting onto a neutron star. Based on RXTE data, we measure the fractional amplitude of the source superorbital variability (with a ∼170-d quasi-period) in the folded and averaged light curves, and find it to be by a factor of ∼2. As proposed before, the superorbital variability can be explained by oscillations of the binary eccentricity. We now present detailed calculations of the eccentricity-dependent flow through the inner Lagrangian point, and find a maximum of the eccentricity of ≃ 0.004 is sufficient to explain the observed fractional amplitude. We then study hierarchical triple models yielding the required quasi-periodic eccentricity oscillations through the Kozai process. We find the resulting theoretical light curves to match well the observed ones. We constrain the ratio of the semimajor axes of the outer and inner systems, the component masses, and the inclination angle between the inner and outer orbits. Last but not least, we discover a remarkable and puzzling synchronization between the observed period of the superorbital variability (equal to the period of the eccentricity oscillations in our model) and the period of the generalrelativistic periastron precession of the binary.

Orbital and superorbital variability and their coupling in X-ray binaries
We review X-ray flux modulation from X-ray binaries on time scales corresponding to the orbital period and those at longer time scales (so called superorbital). Those modulations provide a powerful tool to constrain geometry of the accretion flow. The most common cause of the superorbital variability appears to be precession. We then discuss two specific examples of discoveries of a coupling be...
متن کاملSuper-Orbital Variability in Hard X-rays
We present the results of a study with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope in the 14 – 195 keV range of the long-term variability of 5 low mass X-ray binaries with reported or suspected super-orbital periods — 4U 1636-536, 4U 1820-303, 4U 1916-053, Cyg X-2 and Sco X-1. No significant persistent periodic modulation was detected around the previously reported periods in the 4U 1916-053, Cyg X-2 or Sc...

We study the rapid X-ray time variability in all public data available from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer's Proportional Counter Array on the atoll source 4U 1820–30 in the low-luminosity island state. A total of ∼ 46 ks of data were used. We compare the frequencies of the variability components of 4U 1820–30 with those in other atolls sources. These frequencies were previously found to follo...
متن کاملOrbital and superorbital variability of LS I +61 303 at low radio frequencies with GMRT and LOFAR
LS I +61 303 is a gamma-ray binary that exhibits an outburst at GHz frequencies each orbital cycle of ≈26.5 d and a superorbital modulation with a period of ≈4.6 yr. We have performed a detailed study of the low-frequency radio emission of LS I +61 303 by analysing all the archival GMRT data at 150, 235 and 610 MHz, and conducting regular LOFAR observations within the Radio Sky Monitor (RSM) at...
